all too often when I am zooming out a fixture suddenly I have a black square or rectangle in the beam. Right now when I zoom out a Mac Encore it gets to 33% zoom then it its like shutters have just banged in and the the light/program becomes pointless, any remedy for this?
This also happens with other lanterns and on different computers of mine

That has also been an issue for me. I've forgotten to do the actual bug report to Cast, but my solution has been to just go to the Fixture's beam tools in Properties. Changing the values and changing them back has made it "work" for me.

What graphic cards (family) are you using? It seems to be a rendering related issue.

I've experienced it on both my nVidia GeForce GTX 1080 on my desktop machine and nVidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti on my laptop. I will post some screen shots when I see it again

I also encountered the same issue, both on office computer running single GTX1080 and home desktop with dual GTX1070. It seems the square shadow in the beam disapear if you zoom out
